A bartender named Forsco Scarselli created this cocktail for Count Camillo Negroni at Café Casoni. The count was a fan of Americano’s (Campari, Sweet Vermouth, Club Soda) although he sought more of a bite. Scarselli replaced the club soda with gin and created the Count’s new favorite drink.

Harry Mcelhone left the bar at the Plaza Hotel in NY shortly before prohibition. In 1923, he purchased Harry’s New York bar in Paris. He created the drink for Erskine Gwynne, founder of Boulevardier magazine.

To help fight scurvy on voyages, Mr. Lauchlin Rose invented Rose’s Lime Based Cordial; a citrus requiring no refrigeration. To help fight Rose’s bitter taste, Rear Admiral Sir Thomas Desmond Gimlette added gin. Fun Fact: A gimlet is a handheld drill often found on sailing ships.

Arguably the oldest rendition of a “Cocktail”, the old fashioned was originally referred to as the “Bittered Sling”. The build was spirit, sugar, bitters, and water, though whiskey did not popularize as a spirit of choice until the mid-19th century. The addition of an orange and cherry came in the 1930’s to provide aromatics. Some argue “The Whiskey Cocktail” became “The Old Fashioned Whiskey Cocktail” after the introduction of the Manhattan.

The official cocktail of New Orleans, this elixir was founded within an apothecary ran by Mr. Antoine Peychaud, founder of Peychaud’s bitters. The drink was originally made with brandy, but rye became a popular base spirit as of 1873.

An American army captain tasked a French bartender for a drink to “Take the chill off”. Brandy neat was unacceptable outside of dessert. The bartender created a new concoction, naming the drink after the motorcycle sidecar the captain rode in.

18th century Scottish folk hero Robert Roy Macgregor had an opera written about his tale. While making a Manhattan on opening night a bartender switched American Whiskey for Scotch in honor of the show’s debut.

As the gold rush fattened pockets in Martinez California, miners sought champagne at Julio Richelieu Saloon. Julio did not have champagne. Instead he created a dry drink with sweet Vermouth, bitters, gin and a cherry; known as the Martinez. Fast forward to the turn of the 20th century; a NYC bartender named Martini di Arma di Taggia of the Knickerbocker hotel replaced sweet vermouth with dry vermouth and took away the bitters/cherry. The cocktail became a favorite of John D. Rockefeller. In the 1960’s a vodka martini “Shaken not stirred” was popularized by a Mr. Bond, James Bond.

Official cocktail of Bermuda, the Dark N’ Stormy is a trademark of Gosling Brothers Ltd. The Gosling family began experimenting with rum in the 1860’s. The British Royal Navy began brewing ginger beer on the island. The combination of the two was said to have the “color of a cloud only a fool or dead man would sail under”.
